mSecure-Unterstützung

Linux Client

Hello, it is well-known how microsoft is tracking us and taking away our sovereignty over our PC as we use Windows 11. I am switching over to Linux permanently and as such am looking for an mSecure Linux client. mSecure has always been my favorite go-to password manager but if I am unable to use it satisfactorily in Linux I will be forced to abandon mSecure completely.

Perhaps there are documented solutions on this forum that detail how we might be able to run msecure in Linux?

Hi Michael,

Currently there is no way to use mSecure on a Linux, but we are seeing more demand for this from our users. If we see more of a rise on requests for this, we will look into making a Linux client more seriously. Thank you for your feedback!

Thank you for the reply Mark. Ok, then consider this as another request for the pile then :-)

A native client would be the best scenario but in the meantime here is how I have figured out to run mSecure on ZorinOS Linux as a temporary and acceptable woraround for now:

1) Install VirtualBox

2) Create a new virtual machine and install Windows 10/11 ISO into the virtual machine

3) Configure Windows as you would if you were running it as your primary OS

4) Open the Microsoft store and install mSecure as usual

5) Satisfy mSecure's account authentication by re-sending yourself an email with your authentication QR code, right-click on the QR code image and save as a jpeg/png file andload this file during mSecuire's account authentication challenge

At this point, mSecure runs perfectly and synchonizes all credentials as you would expect. Now the problem is that copy/paste from VirtualBox to ZorinOS doesn't work so here is the fix for that:

1) install the VirtualBox "Guest Additions" software by first making the guest additions ISO available. In a terminal run: "sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-additions-iso"

2) in the Windows  virtual machine open the VirtualBox "Devices->Insert Guest Additions CD Image" (might have to restart the VM, can't remember)

3) open windows explorer and browse to the mounted Guest Additions CD-ROM drive

4) run the guest additions installer and restart the virtual machine

5) voila... copy/paste now works between mSecure in the windows virtual machine and Zorin OS!

The virtual machine can be paused at any time if you don't like VirtualBox using CPU.

Final thoughts. I love using Zorin OS soooo much more than windows, a much more intuitive OS overall. I now can't believe I didn't make the switch years ago when microsoft  was starting to exert its manipulation by wanting us to always sign into windows with an online account rather than a local account; folks, this is one big way how microsoft tracks you and herds you towards using its cloud services like onedrive, etc.

Probably will need the microsoft virtual machine for other things aside from mSecure anyway, but more often than not, the software that I use in windows is also available for Linux, like VS Code, Jetbrains IDE, OBS, Audacity etc... and if it isn't there are thousands of linux apps out there, most of them free.
