How to Migrate to mSecure 6 Using a *.mscx Backup File
This guide is for users with an older version of mSecure that only supports .mscx backup files. mSecure 5 cannot directly import from .mscx, but you can use an older version of mSecure to convert your backup to a format that mSecure 6 can restore from.
Step 1: Install an Older Version of mSecure
Since mSecure 6 cannot restore from a .mscx backup file, you will need to use an older version of mSecure that can. The following versions support .mscx backups and convert them into a .msim file that mSecure 5 and 6 can use:
- mSecure 3.5.x for Mac and Windows.
- mSecure 4.0.cx for Android.
- mSecure 4.5.x for iOS.
If you do not have access to mSecure 4 on Android or iOS, you can download mSecure 3 for Mac or Windows. Learn how to download previous versions of mSecure here.
Step 2: Restore Your Data from the .mscx Backup
Once you have installed an older version of mSecure, follow these steps to restore your data:
On mSecure 3.5.x for Mac or Windows
- Open and unlock the app.
- Click File in the menu bar.
- Select Restore.
- Locate and select your .mscx backup file.
- Click Restore to import your data.
Step 3: Create a New Backup in .msim Format
After restoring your data in an older version of mSecure, create a new backup in .msim format, which is compatible with mSecure 6.
On mSecure 3.5.x for Mac or Windows
- Open and unlock the app.
- Click File in the menu bar.
- Select Backup.
- Choose a save location (e.g., your Desktop folder).
- Save the .msim backup file.
Step 4: Restore the .msim Backup in mSecure 6
Now that you have a .msim backup file, you can restore it in mSecure 6 on any platform.
On a Computer (Recommended if Using Mac or Windows)
- Open mSecure 6 on the same computer where you saved the .msim backup file.
- Follow the Backup and Restore in mSecure 6 guide to restore your data.

- Open the email on your iOS or Android device.
